Midnight Chalk Multi-App Brushes
We like chalk when it's unreliable. Together with Olga Lysenkova, we built a set around how chalk behaves, both on screen and on heavyweight paper stock. There are dense sticks that lay down bright, confident marks for lettering and illustrations, plus soft brushes for dusty trails and backgrounds. Between those extremes are brushes that respond to pressure the way real chalk does, widening, thinning, breaking apart, and leaving dry grain inside the stroke.

The supporting tools matter just as much. The scatter brush handles the loose half of the medium, dropping powder and stray speckle along a path so a line frays outward. Ready-made chalkboard textures provide convincing surfaces, with a grain that answers back from the very first stroke. Together, the toolbox covers the range that stylized illustration and retro typography run on: thick-and-thin lettering with ornament packed around it, powdery shading, dusty halos, and the surface holding it all together. Nothing here needs supplementing from another pack, which is the point.

The block-in is the first stage of a painting: composition laid in, the big value shapes established, and form roughed out in simple masses before any detail or color. Nail it and everything after gets easier; rush it and no amount of rendering will save the piece. Pencil and ink are for sketching and line. Flat, gouache, and pastel are for blocking in and painting big shapes. Dry and grain add texture and break up clean edges. No. The set is built to make the process easier. A basic comfort with layers helps, but the brushes do a lot of the heavy lifting: use one or two as finishing touches, or build a whole environment from a blank canvas.

A tablet or Apple Pencil is strongly recommended. Most of these brushes respond to pressure and tilt — the dry, gouache, and pastel ones especially come alive when they react to your hand. A mouse will get you through the marker and flat work, but the painterly brushes want a stylus.
